Modesty: Swimwear Options

Last summer, I purchased my first one-piece bathing suit since I was about 10 years old. I was a little “iffy” about it at first but then I thought to myself, “If I’m trying to be a woman of God then why would I flaunt around in a bikini at the beach? What message am I sending?” I would never wear my bra and underwear to the beach, so there is no reason I should be wearing a bikini. So I bought that one-piece and you know what happened? I got more compliments then ever. I felt good at the beach, because I was covered-up. And get this—I actually swam! I wasn’t worried about my bathing suit coming undone or falling off, and I still got tan!

Swimsuit season is upon us and we need more ladies sporting those modest suits at the beach. We need more ladies to set examples. “That’s all good,” you may say, “but where can you find modest swimwear?” Lucky for you, I’m going to share a few places!

Target – Target is my absolute favorite place to find modest and affordable swimwear. The key at Target is to shop online because online offers many more choices than in stores, and Target’s return/exchange policy is not complicated if you end up with the wrong size.

Shabby Apple – Shabby Apple has some adorable retro style suits. They also come in many other unique styles as well. Shabby Apple is a little more expensive than Target, but the suits are well made and will last you for years. It’s not a bad idea to invest in a suit that you love, feel comfortable in, and know you will have for a long time.

Lime Ricki – Lime Ricki has a great selection of unique and cute swimsuits. Their “tankinis” are my favorite because they are so easy to mix and match! All their suits come in fun patterns and bright colors so you’re guaranteed to have the most unique suit at the beach!

Modcloth, J.Crew, and Anthropologie- Depending on your price range, these stores also have great selections of modest suits. Looking for a swim dress? This one from Modcloth is darling!

And if by chance you have $200 floating around (a girl can dream right?), this suit from Anthropologie is guaranteed to make you the prettiest most modest girl around. Take a look at this one < Click on ‘one’

If you want a wider selection, J. Crew has a lot of options! Check it out HERE

This is a nice and helpful blog about where to find swimsuits that are one-piece but I don’t agree with the message you are trying to send. When I read this blog, I see that in order to be a proper woman of God, you have to have a one-piece swimsuit. I find it silly that you would suggest that since what you wear to the beach has nothing to do with whether or not you are a good woman of God, and it is a rather discouraging message (for me, anyway.) I don’t agree that wearing a 2 piece to the beach sends a “bad message” at all, in fact, the message it sends is very simple: “I am trying to get a tan” or “I am at the beach and this is considered beach wear.” So, anyway, thank you for all the info but I would like you to know that I can be a woman of God just as good as any other even though I choose a 2-piece bikini :]

We were never trying to send the message that in order to be a woman of God you must wear a one-piece swimsuit. We were merely suggesting some alternative options for those who are looking for modest swimwear. I was also simply speaking from my experience, and sharing that I feel much more comfortable at the beach if I am covered up. You are NOT any less a woman of God if you choose to wear a bikini to the beach. However, I would argue that what you wear to the beach DOES correlate with being a woman of God, since everything we wear correlates with being a woman of God. If we are constantly striving to live the way that God has called us, we will always be conscience of what we put on in the morning. Using sound judgment and wisdom is essential when choosing clothing, especially beachwear. I am often saddened when I see choices of swimwear for young women these days, because it IS considered beachwear. That is where we women have to step and go against what the world deems as appropriate and look to what God sees as appropriate. Hope this helps, and feel free to email me directly if you have any more questions! 🙂

I shop at LimeRicki for all of my modest swimwear. Shabby Apple is more than I wand to spend. Both are Utah based stores, them Mormon’s sure like modesty too! 😉 One other FABULOUS venue for modest swimsuits {also based in Utah} is Hapari. They definitely have some NOT modest swimsuits. Hahaha, but I have several of their cute takinis. Their website is: http://www.hapari.com/

P.s. I just got an email from Lime Ricki for a summer promo of 30% store-wide! It is LRFF2012. I also got one from Hapari for free shipping. It is FRIENDSHIP. 🙂 Happy shopping to you! 🙂

I’ve never really felt super comfortable in two-pieces, so I ended up getting a tankini two piece from Target like one of the ones you posted, and I have to say, I feel so much more confident and not as worried since I’m covered up more. Great article! 🙂
