Sometimes it’s difficult to see the big picture when we are trapped in this self-centered, worldly society. Everything is about us—what we like, what attracts us and draws us in, what makes us comfortable—we’re always chasing things that don’t matter.
That is exactly what I don’t want to do: focus on the wrong stuff.
How do we know if we are focusing on the wrong things? Sometimes it’s hard to decide if our focus is correct. Sometimes we don’t even know for sure until we’ve already made the decision. I’ve realized that the best criteria for making a decision is this: if it’s not centered on Christ and doesn’t glorify Him, then it’s probably not the best thing to be focusing on. Eternity is too precious to let these 80 years (or however many we have) on earth control our decision making.
Whether someone is going through a rough break-up, a hard family situation, a tough relationship with a friend, or a bad time at work, God is always going to be enough.
Don’t let these 80 years deceive you. The world will NEVER leave you satisfied, NEVER leave you pleased and NEVER leave you feeling happy. As it says in this great song I once heard, “You’re chasing nothing all the way into the grave.” You can’t take anything with you when you die. The only things that we can take with us are our faith in Christ, our good works, and our bad deeds. I don’t want to be someone who chases material things, the approval of others, or the “good life.” I want to chase where God leads me.
“Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, O LORD. They rejoice in your name all day long; they exult in your righteousness. For you are their glory and strength” (Psalm 89:15-17).
Take time to walk in the light of the Lord, to let Him guide you, and rely on HIM. Don’t rely on the world. Only God is enough.
